First trial: Devrim

In 1960’s, only american cars and some european cars could be seen in Turkey. However, the economical condition were poor enough and it was very difficult to import cars and their spare parts due to the lack of foreign currency. After the military coup d’état in May 1960, the President Cemal Gursel insisted on the project of developing a national car industry in the country. A group of engineers from different state institutions came together for this project in Railway Car Factory in Eskisehir and started to execute this project. The project name was “Devrim” (revolution).
Devrim was the first ever designed and produced car in Turkey.

They had 140 days to accomplish the car and the difficulty of manufacturing a sample model car from nothing, was very tough, even impossible. The D-day was the “Republic Day celebrations on October 29th. Despite all the handicaps and difficulties of the period, they have succeeded to accomplish the car. Two of the Devrim cars, have been transported by rail from Eskisehir to Ankara, fuel tanks unloaded due to the railway regulations. During the parade, the engine of the car, carrying the President has stopped: they have forgotten to refuel the tank. That was a heaven-sent occasion for those who opposed to the project. The next day newspapers were full of teasing headlines. Due to those anti-Devrim news and to some political and economical reasons, Devrim was never mass-produced.
One of the Devrim cars could be seen at the TÜLOMSAS Factory in Eskişehir, where it was built.
